Good Clean Fun Apron

Aprons have a job to do – protect your clothes. Most of the time my 100% natural custom-made Linen and Linen/Cotton aprons do the job with style, comfort, and that pat-yourself-on-the-back feeling you get when you make a planet-caring choice. But sometimes your work makes such a big mess that you need an apron that’s up to the task. You need a rugged, water-resistant, easy-care functionality!

So I asked myself, why not make an apron with fabric designed for outdoor furniture? Richloom’s Solarium fabric is not only weather and UV resistant, it will withstand 10,000 double rubs! (That’s a LOT of rubs!) It’s durable, water and stain resistant, and easy to clean. Most spills clean up by wiping with a damp cloth or simply rinsing with clear water. And if you go all out with getting grungy, I’ve personally tested repeatedly machine washing my Solarium apron, and it still looks as good as the unwashed fabric I cut it from. I don’t put it in the dryer because it comes out of the washing machine almost dry.

Oh, and did I mention that it comes in fantastic prints? Yes, it comes in tons of fun prints!

So why hasn’t anyone thought of making aprons with outdoor decorator fabric before?  Someone always has to be the first one to jump in the pond.

But what about my commitment to only making sustainable goods? The Richloom Weaving mill is located in High Point, NC and nearly all of its production is completed within 100 miles of the mill. I’m impressed by their commitment to sustainable practices, including manufacturing 90% of their yarns and fabric without using water. And as with almost all of my fabric purchases, I buy remnant pieces  (end-cuts) so I’m doing my bit to prevent waste. So, no, this apron isn’t as sustainable as my linen aprons – it’s synthetic. But you can always buy some By Jeeni 100% linen towels to compensate!

Oh and did I mention the prints are awesome! Yes, it comes in so many fun prints! It’s worth the drive down to New England Fabrics in Keene, NH just to rummage through the Solarium remnant table – every piece is so irresistible I need an intervention to keep from buying it all!
